Responding to Bias in the Classroom
Bias incidents happen all the time whether they are intentional, careless, or innocent expressions of ignorance. This resource was developed by our Diversity and Equity Advisory Committee in an effort to share strategies about how to create safer spaces for learning; when instructors are prepared ahead of time and feel confident about addressing bias, the moment can become an opportunity for learning. Please contact us if you'd like to share any of your own successful strategies or responses.
Some bias incidents rise to the level of reportable offenses. If you feel that the perpetrator of the incident is motivated by bias or that the offense is more than a mistake, please report it, or encourage the victim to report it. If you are unsure, we encourage you to err on the side of reporting bias; even if the offense doesn't warrant an official consequence, it helps us design appropriate interventions that maintain a safe and positive climate and prevent hate crimes.
